It's never too late and awards...

It's never to late to learn new things. I was having lunch with some friends yesterday and mentioned that I've never canned food. Well, they decided to teach me. So today we all went to Millie's house for the canning experience.

I started with a hostess gift...

And some jars...

Meet Millie a/k/a hostess and canning expert.

Meet Millie's mom a/k/a Millie's canning mentor...

Meet Cyndi & Rosalyn a/k/a the helpers...

We peeled...

And we sliced...

And we talked, joked and had fun...

We even licked the bowl clean....

And viola! Don't they look beautiful?

Okay, let's get real. I don't really need to can food living in Arizona. But, I LOVE peaches and what a good excuse to get together with girlfriends. Not that you need an excuse.

Peach Cobbler Recipe:

1 stick of butter
2/3 cup flour
2/3 cup sugar
dash salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla
2/3 cup milk

Melt one stick of butter in 9x9 baking dish. Mix together flour, sugar, salt, baking power, vanilla. Gradually add milk

Pour over butter, don't mix

Spoon on peaches

Sprinkle on Cinnamon

Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes

You must include vanilla ice cream

Yum!

The peaches look beautiful. I love the rosy glow of freshly canned peaches and the recipe looks yummy. I might just open a bottle myself and fix it for our family tonight:) They are a few years old, but they have such a long shelve life. My kids use to love coming home from school and having a bottle of pears or peaches as a snack.
Congratulations on learning to can...it's fun work and a feel good moment to see what you have accomplished.
Congrats on your awards! Also for your sweet comments and visit to my blog...

Congrats on two more well deserved awards!!!

Congrats on the award! Now that you've mastered canning, you need to try an easy version. Ever try making freezer jam? I get the strawberries from Costco, and make loads of freezer jam. Tons better than store bought.

I've always wanted to learn to can but it's seems like such a "big scary" thing. I've always been afraid I would accidentally poison my family. Dumb, I know. I have never heard of anyone getting poisoned from canning. It just sounds so homey to can your own food. Makes me want to put on an apron :o)

I grew up with my mom, grandma and aunts canning anything and everything. I've never done it myself but I'm sure it's much more fun doing it with friends:) Looks like you had a nice time!

I've never canned either! It looks fun though!

I learned how to can from my mom and grandma. In the past few years, I have done it by myself. Let me tell you, it is a lot easier if there are several people in the kitchen together working. One peeling, one slicing,... As long as the kitchen is not too small. LOL! Looks like y'all had a lot of fun. Congrats on the awards and love your blog.

How fun that you learned that and got to spend time with your girlfriends in the process - I can't believe that I've never done it, either!

I have been racing through my evening so I could get to your blog tonight! I love your pictures. It was fun and went so fast. Maybe you could use a jar of peaches in a cluster above your cabinets sometime. I didn't know you were such a decorator... and I hadn't discovered this blog until tonight. I guess I have some reading to catch up on... =)

I'm determined that I will learn to can one day. My Mom always did it when I was growing up as a kid but I just remember it taking forever with lots of stuff that i don't have. hmmm. one day!

MMMMM.... those do look so good! Looks like you gals had a good time to boot! Wish I had learned how to can from my Grandmother. She always made us go play outside. We all had a fear of that pressure cooker. I probably had nightmares from that darn thing. They all had horror stories about them blowing up a house. looking back now... I know what it was. they just wanted to clear the house of children so they could have fun like yall did!..... Oh to be young again.... and keep the wisdom~

My mom and grandma used to can a lot when I was growing up. They did most of their's out side over an open fire. Just like my grandma learned how to do. Those were some long hot summer days.

I've wanted to "can" for so long...I bought the equipment and then the home ec lady at the extension agent's office said you aren't supposed to can on glass-top electric stoves...

I've been so disappointed ever since...

although the home ec lady probably saved a few lives with her pronouncement....

I just bought a box of Utah peaches at the beginning of the week and I don't know how to can. So I sliced them up with sugar and froze them, and left a few out to eat. I want to try your cobbler receipe. When you put the peaches on top, do you sugar them also, or just slice and put them on?
Your hostess gift is so cute...

I found your little wire pumpkins on your table, they look good with the fall stuff in them. I love my little wire pumpkin, it was a surprise gift from a friend one fall...I came home from work and it was staked in my plant by the door with a sweet note :)

You are such a dork...what is this that your blog is "not interesting" Now why on earth would I visit a boring blog every day. Sheeesh I sure have better things to do...and with the gazillion blogs out in blogland there would be no point visiting one that wasn't fun. And SEE we are all here!!!!!!Have a terrific day...and thanks for not making fun of my uncombed hair!

Oh Nikki, I was just playing with you. You said not to be so interesting anymore so I thought I would carry it on from there. If I really didn't think is was interesting I would never post. You have to admit though, I don't have any pictures of heads on my blog...how could it be that interesting? :-)

Looks delicious! I used to "can" with my sister and mom. We did apple sauce, pears, and peaches. Takes some time, but I love the payoff.

Awww, what a great thing to do with girlfriends. My mama is a canner too & I have never done it either. I have eaten so many of her canned goods over the years & it will be a sad day when they stop. Those peaches look yummy & peach cobbler sounds like a perfect thing for this time of year.

How FUN!!! I remember being taught to can apricots by a sweet friend who had been taught by her mom and grandmother. Since then I have canned pears, peaches and tomatoes.
Great job!

My Granny was a "canner." And she made homemade jam. I thought it was just something people from the Depression did. BUT with the way things are looking, we all might be canning soon. On a side note...my mosquitoes would totally kick your scorpions butts!

I have always wanted to learn how to can. Looks like ya'll had a great time, I'm so jealous - wish I could have been there. I definitely need my own canning teacher/mentor. Think of the wonderfully delicious things that you will be able to preserve and share. Your peaches are so pretty in their jars!
